On 25th June, 2019, President Sima Xiao led UPDIS delegation to attend the plenary meeting of the Cambodian National Committee of Economy and Finance regarding the preliminary study for the master plan of the Sihanoukville Multi-functional Economic Zone. The meeting was chaired by Cambodia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, Aun Porn Moniroth, and attended by over 70 senior officials from the Cambodian government, including the Minister of Industry and Handicrafts, Cham Prasidh, the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Sun Chanthol, and the Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority, Mao Havannal.
At the meeting, UPDIS presented our preliminary ideas for the master planning of the Sihanoukville Multi-functional Economic Zone and shared relevant experiences from Shenzhen's urban development and master planning. The meeting had a constructive discussion and agreed that Shenzhen's experience in master planning, infrastructure and industrial park development, environmental protection, liveability and smart cities could serve as an important reference for the planning and development of the Sihanoukville Economic Zone. The meeting also suggested that the master plan for the Sihanoukville Economic Zone should be tailored to local conditions, with in-depth studies on several key issues and adequate preparation for relevant mechanisms and policies.
In the future, UPDIS will continue to work closely with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Cambodian government to ensure that Shenzhen's experience is successfully implemented in Sihanoukville, with the goal of transforming it into "Shenzhen of Cambodia."
