Shenzhen Community Co-Built Gardens
Shenzhen’s Community Co-Built Gardens use urban micro-green spaces as a platform to embody the principles of co-consultation, co-construction, co-governance, and sharing. The initiative engages community residents in the entire process—from site selection, design and construction to maintenance and operation, serving as a bridge for rebuilding neighborly relations, community building, and governance.
Led by UPDIS, the initiative has completed several natural, all-age-friendly co-built gardens in Nanshan and Luohu districts, ranging from 300m2 to 1,500m2. With a design philosophy of low impact, low maintenance, and high quality, each garden reflects the unique cultural characteristics of its community, establishing a growing portfolio of “UPDIS-branded” co-built gardens.
Each garden is built with highly engaged residents of all ages, earning widespread recognition from both the public and government. These formerly underutilized urban spaces have transformed into emotionally resonant hubs of social cohesion, enhancing residents' sense of belonging and happiness. This initiative embodies the vision of turning gardens into playgrounds and ultimately shared homes, contributing to the development of the "Shenzhen Model" for community co-built gardens.
